IS E-CIGARETTES HARMFUL?
Electronic cigarettes are gradually making in-roads into Nigeria and taking on a celebrity posture in the Nightlife of the country
It is no surprise that electronic cigarettes are gradually making in-roads into Nigeria and taking on a celebrity posture in the Nightlife of the country but what actually are electronic cigarettes. They are battery-powered devices that resemble traditional cigarettes but contain cartridges filled with nicotine and other chemicals instead of tobacco leaves. It works by vaporising the liquid chemicals in the cartridges which are in-turned inhaled by the smoker. Although it does not contain tobacco, the presence of additive chemicals such as nicotine may make it harmful especially to the lung.
Electronic cigarettes are the most commonly used Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). In addition to nicotine, they contain other solutions and emissions which are considered toxic to the human body. Several studies have pointed to the fact that electronic cigarettes do have harmful effect on the lungs. Electronic cigarettes have also been a source of fire which caused severe burns to the face.
Several argument, debate and school of thought exist on the harmful effects of electronic cigarettes but we strongly believe that inhalation of vaporised nicotine and other chemicals into the lungs is not healthy and may cause lung damage or may even result to cancer.
