Tips for reducing the risk of COVID-19 infection

The first case of COVID-19 was recorded on 17th November 2019 ,in a 55 year old individual in Wuhan ,located in the Hubei province of China. Since then the WHO has reported about 191,127 confirmed cases, and 7807 deaths in at least 166 countries of the world, and has been declared a pandemic by WHO, with threats to cripple global economic activities. In Nigeria the figure has risen to 8 individuals including a 6 weeks old baby as revealed in a press briefing by the minister of Health Osagie Ehanire. Because it is a novel virus not much is known about the disease, however scientists are working hard to develop a vaccine against the virus, to this end volunteers have been administered the first vaccine.

1. Reduce and if possible Avoid Travels

As much as possible, avoid both local and international travels especially to high risk countries. If you or your loved ones are just returning from a high risk area, or have been in contact with someone who did, the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) recommends you self-quarantine at home for a period of 14 days, if you develop fever, cough, difficulty breathing it is in your best interest and that of your family to report immediately to Nigerian CDC (NCDC) using their contact lines below.

a) Avoid handshakes and close contact. Stay at least 2m away from people

b) Avoid large crowd and gatherings

c) Outings with young children to public places is discouraged.

d) Elderly people as well as people with existing disease conditions should stay home more.

e) Minimize eating outside.

2. Boost Your Immune Levels

Take good care of your immune system, to enable your body to function optimally in fighting against infectious diseases including COVID-19 by

a) Get good rest – resting well (minimum 8 hours daily sleep) help replenish you immune system

b) Eat Healthy – eating healthy balanced diet with enough fruits and veggies will also help. You can also get nutritional supplements for yourself and loved ones to boost your immune system. 3. Practice Simple Good Hygiene
